COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Despite a 22-save performance by junior goalkeeper Brittany Foster (Portland, ME/Portland), Goucher was handed a 15-12 setback by Colorado College this evening in the first of two games head coach Katie Trainor's squad will play here over Spring Break.
It was a game of runs and the first one belonged to the Gophers (1-4). With Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County) and Kate Knitter (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) accounting for five of the goals, Goucher jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 15:01. The Tigers (4-2) got on the scoreboard for the first time on an unassisted goal by Kristin Rider with 13:33 remaining before halftime, and her goal triggered a 4-0 run that had Colorado College trailing by only two (6-4) at the end of the first half.
The Gophers tallied three unanswered goals to begin the second half, taking a 9-4 lead on Blatter's unassisted goal with 23:09 left to play, but the Tigers responded with five consecutive goals and pulled even at 9-9 on an unassisted goal by Rider midway through the period.
Back-to-back goals by Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, MA/Lawrence Academy) provided Goucher with an 11-9 advantage before the Tigers went on a decisive run of six unanswered goals. An unassisted goal by Rider created an 11-11 tie with 9:07 remaining and, just :11 later, Colorado College went ahead to stay on an unassisted goal by Amanda Howard.
When the 6-0 run ended with only :20 left to play, the Tigers were ahead 15-11. There was only enough time remaining for the Gophers to score once as Blatter collected her sixth goal of the game with :10 showing on the clock.
Blatter is averaging 4.4 goals per game this season.
Thanks to a 31-11 edge in the second half, the Tigers managed to outshoot the Gophers, 47-24. The 22 saves by Foster is the most by a Goucher goalkeeper since Laura Webbert stopped 24 shots when the Gophers faced top-ranked Salisbury in the finals of the 2005 Capital Athletic Conference playoffs.
