TOWSON, Md. - Goucher wasn't able to string together back-to-back goals until the second half as Elizabethtown pinned a 20-10 defeat on head coach Katie Trainor's Gophers this afternoon.
The Blue Jays (3-2) broke out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 2:56 before the Gophers got on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal by Kate Knitter (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge). Elizabethtown responded with five consecutive goals to go ahead 8-1 before Knitted assisted a goal by Jenny Lucey (Newbury, NH/Kimball Union Academy) with 18:43 remaining in the first half.
A free-position shot by Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County) produced the Gophers' third and final goal of the first half with 9:09 left to play. The senior attacker has scored at least one goal in 34 consecutive games dating back to the 2006 season.
At halftime, the Blue Jays enjoyed a commanding 15-3 advantage.
The Gophers (1-6) kept Elizabethtown off the scoreboard for the first 11:15 of the second half, but was only able to generate two goals during that stretch. The first was the result of a free-position shot by Colleen Cole (Holliston, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon School) and the second was an unassisted goal by Sandy Okun (Stevenson, MD/McDonogh School).
Blatter and Knitter both notched their second goals of the contest back-to-back midway through the second half, reducing Elizabethtown's lead to 17-7. Okun scored her second goal and Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, MA/Lawrence Academy) and Cindy Villareal (Silver Spring, MD/Wheaton) both got into the scoring act as the Gophers tallied the final three goals of the contest.
Katie Foley stuck seven goals for the Blue Jays, who finished with a 36-24 edge in shots.
