WASHINGTON, D.C. - Goucher's 2008 season - as well as the career of one of the all-time leading scorers in the history of the school's women's lacrosse program - came to an end today when the Gophers bowed to top-seeded Catholic, 21-10, in the Landmark Conference championship game.
Despite a six-goal, one-assist performance by senior attacker Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County), the Gophers (6-10) never led the entire contest. The Cardinals (15-4) were ahead 2-0 thanks to goals by Kate Robinson and Laura Haring before Blatter tallied her first goal 7:26 into the first half.
Following Blatter's goal that made the score 2-1, Catholic went on a run of five unanswered goals, taking a 7-1 lead on an unassisted goal by Caroline Taltavull with 11:41 remaining before halftime. The Gophers outscored the Cardinals, 4-2, during a stretch of 4:07 to close to within 9-5, but Catholic tacked on three goals in the final 3:10 of the period to extend their advantage to 13-5 at the break.
Goucher's deficit fluctuated between eight and 12 goals the entire second half.
Blatter finished her career as the fourth-leading all-time scorer in program history with 211 goals. In addition, she extended her goal-scoring streak to 43 games, the second-longest in NCAA Division III history.
Kate Knitter (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) supplied the Gophers with two goals and an assist. The other two Goucher goals were scored by Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, MA/Lawrence Academy) and Colleen Cole (Holliston, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon School), who also combined to control nine draws.
Robinson, the Landmark Conference Player of the Year, contributed five goals to the victory as the Cardinals outshot the Gophers, 38-22.
