time in the five seasons Katie Trainor has been the head coach by
knocking off Mount St. Vincent, 23-10, this afternoon at Beldon
Field.
Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), who ranked fourth on the team last season as a freshman with 26 goals scored, contributed a career-high eight goals to today's victory over the visiting Dolphins (0-1). After the Gophers were already leading 2-0 thanks to goals by Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) and Sara Miller (Baldwin, Md./Dulaney), Lambert went on a personal four-goal run to put Goucher up 6-0 just 11:12 into the contest.
Lambert tallied her fifth goal with 8:59 remaining before halftime to provide the Gophers (1-0) with a 9-3 advantage and, by the end of the period, it was 12-5 in favor of the home team.
The Gophers scored the first three goals of the second half, taking a 15-5 lead when Natalie Hoffman (Duxbury, Mass./Dublin School) stuck a free-position shot with 28:46 left to play. Another three-goal run later in the period that featured Lambert's sixth goal made the score 19-7.
Khin finished with four goals, while Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hebron School) and Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) chipped in with three goals apiece.
Freshman Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) started in goal for the Gophers and played the entire first half. She was credited with nine saves before being replaced at the beginning of the second half by Gia Thomas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area).
The Gophers outshot the Dolphins, 32-23.
