Cole Fuels Rally from 7-1 Deficit by Sticking Five Goals
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher knocked a six-goal deficit down to a
single goal midway through the second half before Rowan recovered
and came away with a 12-10 victory over the Gophers this afternoon
at Beldon Field.
An unassisted goal by Cindy Villarreal (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) was all the scoring head coach Katie Trainor's squad was able to generate in the opening 19:46 as the Profs (1-0) methodically opened up a 7-1 advantage. But instead of waiting for the second half to try to mount a comeback, the Gophers (1-1) chipped away at Rowan's lead in the time remaining in the first period, closing to within 7-2 on an unassisted goal by Natalie Hoffman (Duxbury, Mass./Dublin School) and to 7-3 when Villareal cashed in a free-position shot.
The two teams traded goals to start the second half before the Gophers sandwiched a pair of goals by Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hebron School) around one by Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) to get to within 8-7. The two teams remained separated by just one goal for only :48 before Alayna Morris scored for Rowan, setting off a three-goal run that staked the Profs to an 11-7 advantage heading into the final 11:48.
Cole finished with five goals, increasing her total for the season after two games to eight.
