MADISON, N.J. – Goucher is picked to finish in third place in the Landmark Conference in 2009, according to a preseason poll of head women's lacrosse coaches and sports information directors at the six member institutions that sponsor the sport.
Catholic, the reigning Landmark champion, and Drew are the two teams that finished ahead of head coach Katie Trainor's Gophers in the poll, which was released today. The Cardinals, who were 17-5 last season and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III championship tournament, were made the heavy favorite to repeat as they accumulated 45 points in the poll and the Rangers received 32.
The Gophers, who lost to Catholic, 21-10, in the finals of the inaugural Landmark Conference playoffs in 2008, picked up 26 points in the poll, three more than Scranton. Susquehanna (15 points) and Moravian (9) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the poll.
Two Landmark members – Juniata and Merchant Marine – do not sponsor women's lacrosse.
The Gophers launch their 2009 season against McDaniel on February 28.
