WESTMINSTER, Md. – Goucher suffered a loss in its first game
of a season for the first time since 2005 today when the Gophers
were handed a 16-6 setback by McDaniel.
The Green Terror (1-0), who finished with a slim 33-29 edge in shots, jumped in front on goals by Sarah Mintz and Brittany Baer in the opening 1:11. The Gophers got on the scoreboard for the first time after 7:19 had elapsed on an unassisted goal by Cindy Villarreal (Kensington, Md./Wheaton), reducing McDaniel's lead to 2-1.
Before Goucher would score its next goal, however, the Green Terror would strike for a total of six – three of them by Baer – to open up an 8-1 advantage. The Gophers (0-1) finally ended a drought that had lasted for more than 11 minutes when Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hebron School) tallied an unassisted goal with 11:26 remaining before halftime.
McDaniel was ahead 9-3 at the conclusion of the first half.
The Green Terror put together a string of six consecutive goals over a span of more than 22 minutes in the second period and led 16-4 before Cole notched her third goal of the contest with 5:58 remaining and Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) her second with just :11 showing on the clock.
Both starting goalkeepers reached double figures in saves: Brittany Foster (Portland, Maine/Portland) went the distance in goal for Goucher and turned away 11 shots; Leanne Hollinger made 13 saves for McDaniel before being relieved midway through the second half.
