TOWSON, Md. – Goucher enjoyed a 7-6 lead over Skidmore at
the end of the first half today, but nearly 22 minutes ran off the
clock in the second half before the Gophers scored goal No. 8. By
that time, the Thoroughbreds had assumed a four-goal advantage and
were on their way to a 14-11 victory.
Although they once trailed 4-1, the Gophers (2-2) went in front 6-5 on a goal by Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hebron School) with 10:10 remaining in the first half. The Thoroughbreds (1-1) pulled even on a goal by Abbie Klaus with 8:23 left in the period, but with 1:03 showing on the clock, Goucher regained the lead thanks to a goal by Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill).
An unassisted goal by Kimberly Segalas 3:58 into the second half created a 7-7 tie, which lasted only 1:09 before Lauren Madden's unassisted goal put Skidmore ahead to stay. The Thoroughbreds tacked on three more goals – including a pair by Segalas – for an 11-7 lead midway through the period.
The Gophers finally got on the scoreboard for the first time in the second half on an unassisted goal by Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) with 8:20 remaining. Goucher got as close as 13-11 with 3:23 left to play on Smith's fourth goal of the contest.
After being outshot 18-13 in the first half, the Thoroughbreds unleashed a total of 22 shots and limited Goucher to 10 in the final 30:00. Brittany Foster (Portland, Maine/Portland), the starting goalkeeper for the Gophers, made 12 of her 17 saves in the second half.
Segalas and Klaus both contributed four goals to the win.
