IRVING, Texas – Only five players managed to score goals for
Goucher against Sewanee today, but the good news is that one of
those players erupted for seven goals and two others tallied five
apiece as the Gophers rolled over Tigers, 22-13.
Sewanee (2-3) enjoyed leads of 2-0 and 4-3 in the opening 11:59 before the Gophers caught the Tigers at 4-4 on an unassisted goal by Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) with 14:50 remaining in the first half. Just :18 later, Goucher went ahead to stay on an unassisted goal by Marlo Tersigni (Boston, Mass./Lawrence Academy).
In fact, Lambert's goal launched a run of nine unanswered goals that provided the Gophers (3-3) with a 12-4 lead at halftime.
The Tigers stuck the first three goals of the second half to reduce their deficit to 12-7, but that's as close as they would get at any point during the final 30:00.
Tersigni supplied the Gophers with a career-high seven goals. The senior midfielder also picked up assists on four goals to finish with 11 points, the first time during her career that she reached double figures in points in a game.
Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hebron School) and Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) both contributed five goals to the victory, while Lambert netted three goals and Goucher's remaining two goals were scored by Jenny Lucey (Newbury, N.H./Kimball Union Academy).
Megan Welton turned in a four-goal, one-assist performance for Sewanee.
The Gophers unleashed a season-high total of 44 shots compared to 36 for the Tigers.
