Gophers Bow to Marlins, Drop Back to .500
Second Five-Goal Outing of Smith's Young Playing Career
March 25, 2009
TOWSON, Md. – With the exception of Becca Smith
(Leesburg, Va./Heritage), Goucher's offense was pretty
much held in check today. The freshman midfielder scored five goals
in a game for the second time in her young career, but the Gophers
fell back to .500 by bowing at home to Virginia Wesleyan,
14-10.
The Marlins (5-4) assumed their biggest lead of the contest on an
unassisted goal by Bethany Adomanis with 6:33 remaining in the
first half that made the score 8-3, but the Gophers (4-4) stuck
three goals in a span of :41 right before halftime – the
first by Smith, the second by Marlo Tersigni (Boston,
Mass./Lawrence Academy) and the third by Andi
Lipson (Morrisville, Pa./George School) – to close
to within 8-6.
Smith tallied all but one of Goucher's four goals in the second
half. She opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 1:32 into the
period that reduced Virginia Wesleyan's lead to 8-7, but then the
Gophers went nearly a full 15:00 without a goal until Smith scored
again with 13:35 left to play.
Smith's final goal of the game made the score 12-10 with 6:11
remaining.
