Gophers Launch Season Feb. 24 at Home Against York
TOWSON, Md. — Senior defenders Sara Miller (Baldwin, Md./Dulaney) and Melissa Zimmerman (Morris Plains, N.J./Academy of St. Elizabeth) will serve as captains of Goucher's women's lacrosse team in 2011, head coach Katie Trainor announced today.
Miller, who has been in the starting lineup for all 48 games during her first three seasons at Goucher, led the Gophers in ground balls (45) and caused turnovers (31) and was a second-team selection on the All-Landmark Conference Women's Lacrosse Team in 2010.
Zimmerman missed the final three games last season due to injury, but still collected 21 ground balls, caused 15 opponent turnovers and controlled five draws.
"I don't think we've had two finer captains (in a season) during my years at Goucher," said Trainor, who was an assistant coach for one season (2005) before being elevated to head coach. "Over the course of their careers, both players have demonstrated on-field leadership abilities, so it came as no surprise to me when they were elected captains by their teammates."
The Gophers open their 2011 season at home against York on February 24. Their entire schedule will be released later this month.
