Four Goals by Khin Helps Goucher Establish 8-4 Lead by End of First Half
TOWSON, Md. — Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) scored seven goals in a game for the second time in her career in leading Goucher to its first win of the season, a 16-14 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan this afternoon on Beldon Field.
The senior midfielder's unassisted goal 7:30 into the contest snapped a 1-1 tie and put the Gophers (1-1) ahead to stay. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) tallied the next two goals — both off free-position shots — to extend Goucher's lead to 4-1.
Khin scored two more times in the first half, including an unassisted goal with :07 showing on the clock, that provided the Gophers with an 8-4 advantage after 30 minutes.
Goucher maintained at least a two-goal edge for the first 13:32 of the second half before an unassisted goal by Nikki Salyers allowed the Marlins (1-2) to close to within 12-11. But Cole bunched three of her goals into a stretch where the Gophers outscored Virginia Wesleyan, 4-1, to build their lead back up to four goals at 16-12.
Cole, who has scored 115 times so far in her career at Goucher, also registered a seven-goal performance last season against Scranton.
Khin contributed five goals to the victory and junior attacker Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) chipped in with three, giving her 12 goals in the three games the Gophers have played against Virginia Wesleyan during her career.
The Gophers outshot the Marlins, 33-31, and both starting goalies went the distance and reached double figures in saves: sophomore Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) stopped 14 shots for the Gophers and Brittany MacKnew was credited with 13 saves for Virginia Wesleyan.
