Smith Takes Four Shots, Tallies Three Goals in Home Opener
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher was at home for the first time this season, but playing on Beldon Field didn't change the Gophers' fortunes as they were saddled with an 18-6 setback by Rowan this afternoon.
After Goucher's Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) stuck a free-position shot with 18:34 remaining in the first half to create a 3-3 tie, the Profs (1-0) responded with five consecutive goals to open up an 8-3 advantage. The only goal the Gophers (0-3) scored the remainder of the period was also the result of a free-position shot by Reifsnyder as Rowan enjoyed a 10-4 lead at the break.
The Profs had another run of five straight goals during the second half, while the Gophers were limited to a pair of unassisted goals by Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) over the final 30 minutes.
Smith was the leading scorer for Goucher as the four shots she took produced three goals.
Michelle Lubrano and Marissa Micciche supplied the Profs with four goals apiece, while Vicky Sucharski turned in a three-goal, seven-assist performance in the victory.
Rowan was able to outshoot head coach Katie Trainor's squad, 33-16, and controlled 19 draws compared to seven for the Gophers. The Profs finished with a small edge in ground ball, 24-22.
Both starting goalies played the entire 60 minutes. For Rowan, Lindsay Barrie made seven saves; for Goucher, Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) turned away eight shots.
