Gophers Open Each Half with Seven Consecutive Goals
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher scored the first seven goals of each half this afternoon on the way to its first win of the season, a convincing 18-7 triumph over Colby-Sawyer.
Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) opened the scoring by sticking a free-position shot just 1:49 into the contest. Over the next eight minutes, the Gophers (1-4) tacked on five goals, including two by Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) and a second by Lambert. Reifsnyder's third goal of the game provided Goucher with its 7-0 lead with more than 16 minutes still remaining before halftime.
Brittney Murphy, who had a hand in all seven of Colby-Sawyer's goals, tallied back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart midway through the opening period only to get the Chargers (0-2) on the scoreboard.
Goucher wasted little time, however, extending its lead to 10-2, thanks to two more goals by Reifsnyder and one by Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage).
The Chargers managed to close to within 11-5 by halftime, but a goal by Lambert just 31 seconds into the second half began another 7-0 run by the Gophers that consumed all but the final 1:34 of the period when Michelle Upham scored twice for Colby-Sawyer.
Reifsnyder contributed six goals to the victory, while Smith, Lambert and Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) added three apiece. Smith also handed out Goucher's only two assists of the game.
Murphy finished with four goals and picked up assists on the remaining three goals the Chargers scored.
The Gophers outshot their opponent, 29-16. Another telling statistics was draw controls as Goucher gained possession on 20 of the 27 draws. Reifsnyder, Khin and Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) each controlled five draws.
