Shaner Turns In 11-Save Effort in 12-6 Loss to Seahawks
ST. MARY'S CIT, Md. — Goucher's 32-26 advantage in shots wasn't reflected in the final score of today's game against St. Mary's (Md.) as the Seahawks pinned a 12-6 setback on the visiting Gophers.
Both starting goalkeepers were kept busy. For Goucher, Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) made plays on 11 of the shots St. Mary's fired at her, but a 14-save performance by Colleen Simpson of the Seahawks is what prevented the Gophers from doing even more damage with their 32 shots.
The only lead the Gophers enjoyed was when Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) opened the scoring 1:37 into the contest. The Seahawks (4-4) responded with back-to-back-to-back goals by Lauren Gray, Emily Shafer and Erin Shackelford in a span of less than three minutes.
St. Mary's departed the field at the end of the first half up 8-3 as Goucher tallied only two goals over the final 28:23 of the period, the first off a free-position shot by Smith and the second off a free-position shot by Andi Lipson (Langhorne, Pa./George School).
A free-position shot by Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) produced Goucher's first goal of the second half, but for the game, the Gophers (2-6) capitalized on only three of their 15 free-position attempts.
An unassisted goal by Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) reduced Goucher's deficit to 9-5 with 25:05 left to play, but the Seahawks were again able to string together three straight goals and, perhaps more importantly, keep the Gophers off the scoreboard until Hannah Brown (Pinedale, Wyo./Dunn School) stuck an unassisted goal with just :23 showing on the clock.
