Miller to Leave Goucher for Division I Opportunity

TOWSON, Md. — Ceri Miller is into her third season as the head women's lacrosse coach at Goucher. It will also be her final season with the Gophers.

Miller has accepted an offer to become the head coach of a new Division I program at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. She will, however, remain at Goucher through the conclusion of the 2016 season.

"Ceri Miller has done an outstanding job of recruiting quality student-athletes and getting the maximum out of their talent," said Geoff Miller, Goucher's athletics director. "Make no bones about it, we are disappointed to see her go as I think she could have done even more significant things here with this lacrosse program. But, you cannot be anything but happy for her that she is being given an opportunity to coach at the Division I level and start up a new program."

"I wish her the very best and thank her for all that she has done to make Goucher's lacrosse program better."

In 2015, Miller guided the Gophers to an 11-7 record, their first winning season since 2006. Her team also qualified for the Landmark Conference playoffs and she, along with the assistant coach Kristen Bilney, were selected as the Coaching Staff of the Year in balloting by the conference's head coaches.

"I am so thankful for the opportunity Geoff Miller gave me to coach at Goucher over these past two years and then allowed me to stay for a third," commented the 2008 graduate of McDaniel. "This career move is bittersweet. Being named as the first women's lacrosse coach in the history of Wofford College is an honor and I am thrilled. However, leaving my Goucher team is one of the toughest things I have ever had to do."

"I have felt nothing but support from Geoff, the team, and their families. I cannot express how much that support means to me.  We are on the path of greatness here at Goucher and there is no doubt in my mind that the next coach will be able to build off of the foundation and success we have had these last two seasons. Preseason has been great so far, we look fit and strong and I am looking forward to having a final awesome season with this team before I start my next adventure."

The Gophers will launch their 2016 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 20, against Wesley.

The Wofford program's first year of competition will be 2018, although the first incoming class of recruits will enroll in the fall of 2016.
