Harney Ends the Night with Four Points Against Marietta
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (2-4 overall) fell in overtime to the Pioneers of Marietta College (5-3 overall), 11-10.
Two minutes into the game, Emma Nelson put the Gophers on the board off a pass from Wrenn Harney following a Marietta turnover. Off the draw control, Marietta took a shot on Kennedy Harper, who snagged her first save of the game. The Pioneers scored their first goal of the game on a free-position attempt at the 12:27 mark. Over the next three minutes, Katie Bloom scored back-to-back goals both assisted by Harney. The Pioneers scored at the 7:22 mark off the draw control. Tatiana Emeruwa scored the fourth goal for the Gophers with 5:26 left on the clock. After a Marietta turnover, K. Bloom scored to give the Gophers a three-goal lead. Marietta countered with a goal to cut the deficit to two.
Marietta set the tone early in the second by taking a shot 30 seconds in. Harper added another save off a shot from the Pioneers. Marietta scored back-to-back goals to tie the game up at five apiece with under five minutes remaining in the first half. The Pioneers closed out the half with a goal to give them a 6-5 lead going into halftime.
The Pioneers scored early into the third quarter to give them a two-goal advantage (13:24). Marietta was able to capitalize off of a free position attempt and add another goal at the back of the net (10:11). After a caused turnover from Emeruwa, senior Amaya Locke was able to sink one at the back of the net at the 4:12 mark. Less than a minute later, Nelson scored off of a free position attempt to bring the Gophers within one.
Marietta scored back-to-back goals within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to give them a 10-7 lead. The Gophers fired back with a goal from Emeruwa 40 seconds later. Just over 30 seconds later, Imani Ward scored to bring the Gophers within one. Five minutes later, Harney capitalized off the free position attempt. The game remained tied at 10-10 at the end of regulation.
After winning the draw control, Marietta scored the game-winning goal two minutes and ten seconds into overtime.
Harney led the Gophers with four points, scoring one goal and adding three assists. Harney also added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. K. Bloom scored three goals in the contest. On the defensive end, Maura Poulton scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Harper played all 60 minutes in goal, recording seven saves and allowing 11 goals on 18 shots.
The Gophers return to action on the road against Immaculata on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
