BRYN MAWR, Pa. - A successful penalty kick by Elizabeth Hoffman (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Calvert) got Goucher on the scoreboard in the 31st minute and the Gophers added two more goals before halftime on the way to a season-opening 6-0 victory today over Lincoln in the opening round of the Bryn Mawr Invitational Tournament.
With the win, which the Gophers (1-0) achieved despite playing short one player the entire contest, head coach Tati Korba's squad advances to the tournament's championship game on Sunday where it will take on Immaculata. The Mighty Macs earned their spot in the title tilt opposite Goucher with a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph over Bryn Mawr.
Sisley Pumilia (Chesterfield, NH/Keene) and Dee Moser (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) supplied the Gophers with unassisted goals at 34:51 and 44:34, respectively, stretching Goucher's lead over the Lions to 3-0 at halftime.
Hoffman also opened the scoring in the second half, knocking in an unassisted goal at 50:51. Bri Girard (Seymour, CT/Seymour) was awarded assists on Goucher's final two goals -- one by Moser at 52:53 and the other by Ali Philippides (West Simsbury, CT/Kingswood-Oxford) at 85:24.
The Gophers finished with a 33-1 advantage in shots. Freshman goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, MA/Algonquin Regional) preserved the shutout by making a save on the Lions' only attempt on goal.
