Gophers Suffer 2-0 Setback in First Game on New Turf
TOWSON, Md. – There was no happy ending to the historic
women's soccer game played tonight on Beldon Field. Instead of a
win over Hood in the inaugural intercollegiate contest played on
the new synthetic turf and the first night game in the history of
Goucher's women's soccer program, the Gophers fell short in a
hard-fought battle with the Blazers, who prevailed 2-0
The visiting Blazers (1-0) assumed a 1-0 lead at 36:23 of the
first half on an unassisted goal by Cara Jordan. Jordan also
tallied Hood's second goal with just 1:41 remaining in the
contest.
Hood finished with a 28-8 advantage in shots, which forced junior goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) of the Gophers to make 15 saves. Rachelle Buhrman and Kirsten Cacciola split time in net for the Blazers: Buhrman played the entire first half and stopped four shots before being relieved at the start of the second half by Cacciola, who faced only two shots and made one save.
