Two Goalkeepers Maintain Control into 70th Minute
LANCASTER, Pa. — Despite a 23-12 advantage in shots, Goucher suffered a 1-0 loss to Lancaster Bible this afternoon.
The two starting goalies — senior Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) for Goucher and Emily Lloyd for Lancaster Bible — combined to make eight saves in the first half, which ended with the two teams locked in a scoreless draw. Matthews made two more saves in the second half before the Chargers (2-1) were able to get on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal by Whitney Heise at 69:21.
The Gophers (0-2-1) had several chances to score following Heise's goal, but were thwarted each time by Lloyd, who finished with 13 saves.
"We are creating quite a few scoring opportunities, but right now we are having trouble finishing," head coach Tati Korba commented after the game. "I can think of at least eight 1v1's we had today and maybe 11 over the last two games, but just couldn't knock the ball in. Once we start converting these chances, we'll be fine."
Goucher's final scoring opportunity occurred in the 90th minute when the Gophers were awarded a corner kick that led to a shot by junior midfielder Sarah Lodge (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown), but her attempt sailed high.
