Senior Midfielder Supplies Three Goals to 4-1 Win Over Gators
TOWSON, Md. — It took Goucher 25 shots before the Gophers got on the scoreboard against Notre Dame (Md.) today. The Gators, on the other hand, cashed in on their very first shot of the contest.
But after taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior midfielder Sisley Pumilia (Spofford, N.H./Keene) at 55:36, the Gophers went on to take eight additional shots — and score three more goals — to merit a 4-1 victory over the visiting Gators (3-3) on Beldon Field.
Goucher went up 2-0 — and assumed a 27-0 edge in shots — when Pumilia tallied her second goal of the game at 67:54. But just 24 seconds later, Kelsey Kempf took the first shot for Notre Dame, a deep ball that sailed over the head of the goalkeeper and into net to make the score 2-1.
By the time sophomore Regan Foy (Crofton, Md./The Key School), who was making her first start of the season in goal for Goucher, earned the first of her two saves, her team's lead had been restored to two thanks to a goal by sophomore defender Kristen Gartside (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) in the 77th minute.
Pumilia closed out the scoring at 82:10 when she deposited a long shot from outside the box. It was the 35th goal of her career, which makes her the No. 2 all-time goal-scorer in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program. She passed Allison Healy (1998-2000), who supplied the Gophers with 34 goals during her three-year playing career.
This also marked the fifth time during her career that Pumilia has scored three or more goals in a game.
