TOWSON, Md. — Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's) scored once in the first half when she was able to curve a shot into the right corner of the net and added another goal in the second half by finishing off a breakaway as Goucher pinned a 2-0 setback on Bryn Mawr this afternoon.
Brooke Merchant (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) picked up an assist on Puopolo's first goal at 3:08. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first half as the Owls (1-2) were limited to one shot over the opening 45 minutes.
It was until the 70th minute that the score changed when Puopolo chipped a ball over the opposing goalkeeper into the net. The two goals she tallied today were the senior forward's 11th and 12th of her collegiate career.
Puopolo had two other two-goal performances for the Gophers, both during the 2012 campaign. In back-to-back games as a sophomore, she contributed a pair of goals to an 8-0 victory over Notre Dame (Md.) and a 5-0 triumph over Hood.
By game's end this afternoon, the Gophers (2-0-1) owned an 8-4 advantage in shots. Lexi Rudolph (Kensington, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), making her third start of the season in goal for Goucher, had to make only one save to earn the shutout and keep her goals-against average at 0.00 through more than 280 minutes.
For the Gophers, who once trailed the all-time series between the two schools, 8-1, this was the third year in a row they defeated the Owls and each one was by the identical 2-0 score.
The next game for head coach Tati Korba's Gophers will be Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Lancaster Bible.
