Dominant First Half Pushes Chargers Over Gophers
LANCASTER, PA - The Goucher College Gophers (1-7-0 overall) traveled to take on the Chargers of Lancaster Bible (4-3-0 overall) after weather caused the game to be postponed from Tuesday to Thursday evening.
The teams took the first few minutes of the game to feel each other out, with no shot on goal coming until the 7:18 mark. Following this, the offense favored the Chargers, recording the first four shots, and earning a corner in the process. Lancaster Bible was able to capitalize after a foul in the box led to a penalty kick (16:57).
The game remained in neutral territory with no one earning a shot until the next goal by the Chargers at 25:03. Jasmine Haskell recorded the first shot on net for the Gophers, forcing Lancaster Bible's keeper into action. The final goal of the half came with just under 10 minutes left, giving the Chargers the 3-0 lead.
Goucher opened the second half on the attack. Mehar Singh recorded an early shot on net, before the teams traded shots. Lancaster Bible took the opportunity from back-to-back fouls and maintained the offense, earning three shots in five minutes, all requiring Nia George to make the save. These efforts wore down the defense, allowing the Chargers to get their fourth goal of the night (74:55). The remainder of the game favored Lancaster Bible, and despite the five shots on net, they were stopped at four.
The Chargers outshot the Gophers 20-5, with 12 of these shots coming in the second half. Lancaster Bible also earned six corner kicks, compared to Goucher's one. Sophomore, George, faced 11 shots of goal, and tallied seven saves. Five different Gophers had added to Goucher's offensive efforts, including seniors Jordan Wood and Becca Maddox.
The Gophers are back in action on Saturday, September 27th at 1pm as they travel to Drew University for their first Landmark Conference match. The women will return home on Saturday, October 4th, for a game against Scranton during Blue & Gold weekend.
