YORK, PA – The Goucher College Women's Soccer team (1-8 overall; 0-1 conference) traveled to face the Spartans of York College (5-3-2 overall) on Wednesday evening, where the Spartans controlled the match from start to finish, defeating the Gophers 9-0.
York (PA) wasted no time applying pressure, firing their first shot less than three minutes into play. Goalkeeper Nia George stood tall early, making her first save at the 7:52 mark and holding off a flurry of Spartan attempts. After several near chances, York finally broke through at 22:33 to take the 1-0 lead. The Gophers defense tightened up for the remainder of the half, sending the game into the break with York leading by just one.
The Spartans struck again quickly after halftime, capitalizing on a corner kick just four minutes into the second period. York's attack only intensified from there, tacking on three more goals in a five-minute span before adding another in the 68th minute. Nicola Delliponti scored her first goal of the season to make it 7-0, and two more tallies down the stretch brought the final margin to nine.
The Spartans held the Gophers to zero shots while recording 37 and earning 10 corner kicks. George played the full 90 minutes in net for Goucher, recording 14 saves against the heavy offensive pressure.
The Gophers return home for the first game of a Beldon field doubleheader on Saturday, October 4th at 1pm against Scranton.
