TOWSON, Md. - Sam Sutherland (North Reading, MA/Austin Prep), Bethany Natoli (Alexadria, VA/O'Connell) and Sarah Keifer (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) provided Goucher with a first-place performance in an individual event today against Catholic, but the Cardinals defeated the Gophers, 121-84.
Natoli and Sutherland, along with Candace Crasto (Tallahassee, FL/Urbana) and Britt Hogstrom (Killington, VT/Woodstock Union), were both on Goucher's victorious 400-yard medley relay that earned 11 points and helped give the Gophers (0-2, 0-2 Landmark) a 13-4 lead after one event. The winning time in the 400 medley was 4:22.78.
Catholic swimmers finished 1-2 in three of the first four individual events before Sutherland placed first in the 100 butterfly, completing the event in 1:03.59.
Natoli touched first in the 100 backstroke (1:05.63) and Keifer took first place in the 500 freestyle (5:50.95).
Hogstrom was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle (:26.40), and the quartet of Mara Baron (Wayzata, MN/Breck School), Crasto, Keifer and Sandy Okun (Stevenson, MD/McDonogh School) placed second in the 400 freestyle relay.
