TOWSON, Md. – The two Goucher swimmers who are reigning Landmark Conference champions in two events both placed first in a pair of individual events today to help the Gophers earn victories over Drew, 54-37, and Merchant Marine, 65-25.
Today's two wins bump the Gophers' final 2008-09 record to 7-5 heading into the Landmark Conference Swimming & Diving Championships that will take place February 13-15 in Kings Point, N.Y.
Bethany Natoli (Alexandria, Va./O'Connell), who placed first in both of the backstroke events at the inaugural Landmark championship meet 11 months ago, touched first today in the 200-yard back and the 400-yard individual medley. Her winning times: 2:23.15 in the 200 back and 5:09.83 in the 400 IM.
Britt Hogstrom (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union), who will get a shot next month to defend her Landmark titles in the 50 free and 100 free, posted the fastest times today in the 100 free (:58.26) and 200 Free (2:07.31).
Natoli and Hogstrom, along with Lindsey Phillipson-Weiner (Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) and Sam Sutherland (North Reading, Mass./Austin Prep), were also on Goucher's victorious 200 medley relay today that finished in 2:01.50.
Goucher produced the first-place performer in three other individual events: Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) in the 50 free (:27.30), Sutherland in the 200 butterfly (2:27.43) and Phillipson-Weiner in the 500 free (5:50.20).
Phillipson-Weiner was runner-up to Hogstrom in the 100 free as she completed the event in 2:10.35 and Judith Stern (Reisterstown, Md./Grier School) was second behind Sutherland in the 200 butterfly (2:41.27). The Gophers were denied first place in the 1000 free, but filled the next two spots in that event as Hillary Fabrico (Kingston, N.Y./Poughkeepsie Day School) placed second (12:59.07) and Stern was third (13:14.36).
