KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Britt Hogstrom (Killington,
Vt./Woodstock Union) successfully defended her titles in
the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, plus she was the first swimmer to
complete the 200 free, but she wasn't the only Goucher swimmer to
place first in more than one individual event at the 2009 Landmark
Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, which concluded
tonight.
Sam Sutherland (North Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) turned in a pair of first-place performances: in the 200-yard individual medley on Friday and the 100 butterfly Saturday. Sutherland, who took third place in the 200 IM at last year's Landmark meet, established new school and conference records with her winning time of 2:14.97.
Sutherland shared second place in the 100 butterfly at the 2008 Landmark meet, but with her performance of :59.84 this year, she broke both the school and conference records in the event.
Sutherland earned a shot at a third Landmark title by making tonight's championship finals of the 200 butterfly, but she placed fourth with her time of 2:22.65.
Hogstrom set new school and conference records in all three of the individual events in which she competed at this year's meet. She completed the 50 free on Friday in :25.02, 3-hundredths of a second ahead of Scranton's Carolyn Gillespie, the 200 free on Saturday in 1:59.90 and the 100 free in :54.82 tonight.
Hogstrom and Sutherland were the only Goucher swimmers to reach the championship finals in an individual event on Friday, but the Gophers did earn points in the 500 free thanks to two swimmers making the consolation finals: Lindsey Phillipson-Weiner (Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) placed eighth (5:33.79) and Victoria Adinolfi (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) was 12th (5:58.60).
On Saturday, Bethany Natoli (Alexandria, Va./O'Connell) represented Goucher in the championship finals of two events: finishing in third place in the 400 IM (4:57.84) and in fourth in the 100 back (1:04.02). She made tonight's championship finals of the 200 back and touched in 2:16.40, good for fourth place.
Judith Stern (Reisterstown, Md./Grier School) competed in the 400 IM along with Natoli and finished in 12th place (5:34.96), and Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) was Goucher's second competitor in the 200 free where she ended up in 11th place (2:12.32).
In addition, Emily Hasse (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) made Saturday's consolation finals of the 100 breast and finished in 12th place (1:21.86).
Two Goucher swimmers earned points today with their performances in the 1650 free: Phillipson-Weiner secured 12 points by placing third (18:52.34) and Hillary Fabrico (Kingston, N.Y./Poughkeepsie Day School) collected three points for finishing in 10th place (21:01.60). Hasse made tonight's consolation finals in the 200 breast and placed 11th (2:54.00), while Okun (1:02.44) and Stern (2:40.70) took 12th place in the 100 free and 200 butterfly, respectively.
The top finish by the Gophers in one of the five relay events was second place in the 800 free on Saturday. The foursome of Natoli, Phillipson-Weiner, Sutherland and Hogstrom posted a combined time of 8:17.55, which is a new school record.
Over the three days, Goucher was awarded a total of 268 points, which put head coach Tom Till's squad in fourth place in the final team standings. Scranton made it back-to-back Landmark championships by racking up 667 points.
