SELINSGROVE, Pa. – By taking first place in six of the first seven events, Goucher was able to open up a healthy lead over Susquehanna this afternoon in the first meet of the season for both teams. The Crusaders made a spirited run down the stretch, but the Gophers earned enough points in the final four events to emerge with a 103-100 victory.
After a 1-2 finish by Britt Hogstrom (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) and Caroline Marris (Merchantville, N.J./The George School) in the 100-yard freestyle, the Gophers (1-0) owned a 29-point advantage, 80-51. Hogstrom's winning time in the 100 free was :57.40, giving her a more than three-second win over her teammate.
Goucher could do no better than second place in any of the final three individual events, but the Crusaders (0-1) still found themselves trailing 99-89 heading into the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Gophers needed only to avoid being disqualified in the final event to come out on top, which they did by taking second place.
With the foursome of Bethany Natoli (Alexandria, Va./O'Connell), Lindsey Weiner-Phillipson (Merion, Pa./Lower Merion), Sam Sutherland (North Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) and Hogstrom leading off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay (2:00.14), Goucher led 13-4 after just one event.
Over the next five events, Goucher received first-place performances from Phillipson-Weiner in the 1650 free (20:52.89), Hogstrom in the 200 free (2:05.06), Natoli in the 200 individual medley (2:28.39) and Sutherland in the 100 butterfly (1:05.76). Sutherland was runner-up to Susquehanna's Catherine Harris in the 50 free as Harris completed the event in :27.35 to beat out Sutherland by 2 one-hundredths of a second.
