WASHINGTON, D.C. – Judith Stern (Reisterstown, Md./Grier School) and Sam Sutherland (North Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) both placed first in a pair of individual events this evening, helping Goucher earn its second win of the season.
In a 111-79 victory over Gallaudet, Stern touched first in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, and Sutherland posted the fastest times in the 100 and 200 frees. The winning times: 13:08.44 in the 1000 free and 1:14.30 in the 100 butterfly for Stern; :59.01 in the 100 free and 2:08.82 in the 200 free for Sutherland.
Goucher's only other first-place performance in an individual event was accomplished by Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) in the 50 free. Okun completed the event in :27.77.
Goucher swimmers finished 1-2 in three individual events: Hillary Fabrico (Kingston, N.Y./Poughkeepsie Day School) placed second behind Stern in the 1000 free (13:20.46), Lindsey Phillipson-Weiner (Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) was runner-up to Sutherland in the 200 free (2:15.28) and Bethany Natoli (Alexandria, Va./O'Connell) touched 34-hundredths of a second after Okun in the 50 free.
The Gophers (2-1) produced the first- and second-place entries in the opening event of the meet to grab an early 15-0 lead. The victorious 200 medley relay was comprised of Caroline Marris (Merchantville, N.J./George School), Emily Hasse (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills), Victoria Adinolfi (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Okun and the winning time was 2:25.40. They also ended the meet with a win in the 200 free relay as the quartet of Sutherland, Marris, Okun and Britt Hogstrom (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union finished in 1:48.52.
