SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Goucher opened its 2010-11 season today with a dual meet against Susquehanna, one of the three teams which finished ahead of head coach Tom Till's Gophers at last year's Landmark Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. The Crusaders, who produced the first-place finisher in 10 of the 12 individual events, prevailed 172-82.
The only contested event in which Susquehanna swimmers didn't take both first and second places, in fact, was the 100-yard freestyle where Christie Savard of the Crusaders was the winner (:57.50) and Goucher's Sarah Eastland (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) was the runner-up (1:00.14).
Eastland also placed third in the 200 free (2:10.03).
With a commanding 172-27 lead with only three events remaining, the Crusaders (1-0, 1-0 Landmark) opted to swim exhibitions the rest of the way, opening the door for Victoria Adinolfi (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) to earn nine points for the Gophers (0-1, 0-1 Landmark) with her first-place performance in the 50 butterfly and Ruth Logan (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) to do the same thing in the 200 individual medley.
Adinolfi's winning time in the 50 fly was :30.68; Logan completed the 200 IM in 2:29.35.
Catherine Gepner (West Allenhurst, N.J./Ocean Twp.) placed second and Erika Flores (Nogales, Mexico/Lourdes) was third in the 50 fly with times of :33.08 and :34.88, respectively. Runner-up to Logan in the 200 IM with a time of 2:36.32 was Sarah Pardus (Stratham, N.H./Exeter), who placed third in the 100 breast (1:22.17).
Adinolfi was third in the 200 IM (2:36.61), Logan was third in the 1000 free (12:20.95) and Lindsey Phillipson-Weiner (Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) was third in the 500 free (5:51.45).
Goucher's entry of Gepner, Rachel Lyon (Fallston, Md./The John Carroll School), Eastland and Phillipson-Weiner took first place in the 200 free relay, completing the event in 1:56.31.
