SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Goucher opened its 2012-13 season today against Susquehanna and the two-time defending Landmark Conference champions defeated head coach Thomas Till's squad, 184-72.
Sophomore Nicole Craver (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) accounted for the only two first-place performances for the Gophers (0-1) in an individual event. By completing the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.01, she finished in first, 76-hundredths of a second ahead of Susquehanna's Valerie Stern.
Craver was uncontested in the 200 individual medley, winning that event in 2:25.04.
Sophomore Mel Lovalvo (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was the runner-up in the 1000 free with her time of 12:12.38.
The Crusaders (1-0) declared the 400-yard free relay as a non-scoring exhibition for their three entries, opening the door for the Gophers to come with points for both first and second place in the meet's final event. Placing first with a time of 4:17.76 was the foursome of Sydney Patterson (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson), Marykate Malone (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard), Rachel Lyon (Fallston, Md./The John Carroll School) and Abbey Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Berean Christian).
