Gophers Pin Resounding 124-73 Setback on Bison
TOWSON, Md. — By taking at least first place in seven of the nine individual events and both relays, Goucher came up with enough points this afternoon to record a resounding 124-73 victory over Gallaudet in the von Borries Aquatic Center.
Meet Begins with Win by Goucher's 200 Medley Relay Entry
TOWSON, Md. — By taking at least first place in seven of the nine individual events and both relays, Goucher came up with enough points this afternoon to record a resounding 124-73 victory over Gallaudet in the von Borries Aquatic Center.
The meet began with the Gophers (1-5) scoring 11 points for the first-place performance of its entry of Lillian Eden (Ipswich, Mass./Westover), Tierney Doran (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach), Kellyn Brower (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and Patrice D'Orazio (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph Hill Academy) in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome completed the event in 2:16.26.
It ended with Mel Lovalvo (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), Rachel Lyon (Fallston, Md./The John Carroll School), Sydney Patterson (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson) and Abbey Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Berean Christian) turning in a combined time of 1:54.87 to win the 200 freestyle relay.
In between, the only events in which the Bison (1-4) produced the winners were the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. In the 100 back, Wegman placed second (1:12.13); Nicole Craver (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) was runner-up in the 100 breast with her time of 1:14.19.
Craver was the first swimmer to touch in both the 100 free (:58.60) and 200 individual medley (2:19.12). Marykate Malone (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) was second in the 100 free (1:03.91).
Lovalvo led a 1-2 finish for the Gophers in the 1,000 free and Lyon did likewise in the 200 butterfly. In the 1000 free, Lovalvo was clocked at 11:57.64 and she was followed by Malone (12:33.93); in the 200 fly, Lyon's time of 2:15.46 landed her in first place ahead of Brower (2:17.41).
Goucher pulled off a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 free. The first to complete the event was Wegman in :28.15, Emmy Martin (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) was second (:29.13) and Patterson was third (:29.23).
Patterson posted a time of 1:09.64 to take first place in the 100 fly, ahead of Martin, who was second (1:15.04). Lovalvo was clocked at 5:55.28 in the 500 free, good for first place.
