SCRANTON, Pa. — Goucher had one swimmer in the championship finals of the 200-yard individual medley and another in the consolation finals of the 50-yard freestyle tonight at the 2014 Landmark Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.
Nicole Craver (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) came out of the morning preliminaries as one of the top eight performers in the 200 IM. In the championship finals, the junior was clocked at 2:15.25, good for fifth place and 14 points toward Goucher's team score.
In the preliminaries, Craver posted a time of 2:15.71.
Only four swimmers in the history of Goucher's women's swimming program have posted faster times in the 50 free than the 25.87 seconds that freshman Lizzy Hannifin (Denver, Colo./East) achieved in the preliminaries, but that still left her in the second grouping of eight finalists. Her time of :26.09 in tonight's consolation finals landed her in 16th place overall.
Goucher's entries in the two relay events contested tonight both finished in eighth place. In the 200 free relay, the foursome of Hannifin, Kellyn Brower (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), Rebecca Kotula (Fallston, Md./John Carroll School) and Craver recorded an aggregate time of 1:46.48; in the 400 medley relay, it was Brower, followed by Craver, Catherine Gepner (West Allenhurst, N.J./Ocean Twp.) and Hannifin compiling a time of 4:26.81.
After the first day of the three-day meet, head coach Thomas Till's Gophers are in eighth place in the team scoring with 59 points, leaving them 59 points behind the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
