TOWSON, Md. — Freshman Alexis Regopoulos (Fitchburg, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) has gotten her Goucher career off to a stirring start, with victories in five of the six individual races she has competed in thus far, and after two more race wins on Saturday she has been chosen as the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for October 27-November 2.
Regopoulos becomes the first women's swimmer to receive the conference's weekly award since Sarah Eastland was recognized on November 1, 2010.
This past Saturday, she registered victories in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500 free at a tri-meet hosted by St. Mary's (Md.). Regopoulos, swimming both events for the first time as a Gopher, posted times of 11:09.02 in the 1000 free and 5:27.28 in the 500 free.
Both of those marks were faster than any time recorded by a Goucher swimmer at those distances since 2010, and the 1000 time was the seventh-fastest in Landmark history.
Regopoulos is the ninth different Gopher athlete to be honored as a Landmark Athlete of the Week in 2014-15.
Goucher returns to the pool this Saturday for its home opener, a tri-meet against Juniata and Scranton. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. from the von Borries Aquatic Center.
