ST. MARY'S CITY, MD — The bottom third of Goucher's
singles line-up produced a pair of crucial victories today as the
Gophers defeated St. Mary's (Md.), 5-4.
After winning two of the three doubles matches, the Gophers (6-11)
needed only to split the six singles matches to finish off the
Seahawks. They picked up the wins they needed from
Stephanie Austin (Woodbridge, CT/Amity Regional)
at No. 3, Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/Ross
School) at No. 5 and Sally Gordon (Onancock,
VA/Broadwater Academy) at No. 6.
Austin prevailed in a tiebreaker to win the first set of her match
against Jessica Peterson before completing her 7-6 (4), 6-0
victory, while Scott-Giry defeated Amanda Collins 6-0, 6-2, and
Gordon was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Jerilyn Rogalski.
Scott-Giry and Gordon were also triumphant in doubles play for
Goucher and they were paired together at No. 3 and posted an 8-4
win over Collins and Katherine Garlock. The Gophers' other doubles
victory was achieved by Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains,
NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Tanya Cooley
(Arlington, VA/Wakefield) at No. 1 where they pinned an
8-4 setback on Sarah Weisse and Michelle Compton.
