FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Goucher may get another shot at
Mary Washington during the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference
championship tournament, but for today at least, the nationally
ranked Eagles (18-2) were more than the Gophers could handle.
The Eagles' 9-0 triumph over the Gophers (6-12) began with a sweep
of the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Katie Miglin and Natalia
Fugate knocked off Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch
Plains) and Tanya Cooley (Arlington,
VA/Wakefield), 8-1.
Heinz suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Becky Morse-Karzen at first
singles and Cooley bowed to Becky Malpeli 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. The
Gophers were able to win only eight games in the six singles
matches as the Eagles, No. 10 in the ITA's Division III national
rankings, ran their current winning streak to 12 matches.
