TOWSON, MD — Goucher earned a spot in the semifinals
of the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament by
finishing off York, 8-1, today in an opening-round match.
The Gophers' opponent in the semifinals on Friday will be
top-seeded Mary Washington, which was awarded a bye in the first
round. The other semifinal matches second-seeded Salisbury and No.
3 Catholic.
The fourth-seeded Gophers (7-12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead by
sweeping the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Carly Heinz
(Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and
Tanya Cooley (Arlington, VA/Wakefield) downed Erin
Dolac and Kelly Summers, 8-5.
Stephanie Austin (Woodbridge, CT/Amity Regional)
and Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton)
were paired together at second doubles and posted an 8-6 triumph
over Katie Muir and Megan Logan; at No. 3, Chloe Scott-Giry
(Amagansett, NY/Ross School) and Sally Gordon
(Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy) defeated Kristin
Frederick and Meghan Bedard, 8-4.
All five of Goucher's wins in singles play were achieved in
straight sets. At No. 1, Heinz polished off Dolac 7-5, 6-1, and at
No. 2, Cooley toppled Heidi Acker 6-4, 6-2.
Winners of the remaining singles matches were Austin at No. 3,
Grimm at No. 4, Scott-Giry at No. 5 and Megan Logan of the Spartans
at No. 6.
