Four Wins in Singes Play Follows Resumption of MatchApril 19, 2007
TOWSON, MD — Goucher was leading Notre Dame (Md.),
4-1, on April 12 when play was suspended. The two teams resumed the
match today, allowing the Gophers to complete an 8-1 triumph over
the Gators.
Victories in two of the three doubles matches and at fifth and
sixth singles on the day the match got under way provided the
Gophers (8-12) with the 4-1 lead. Stephanie Austin
(Woodbridge, CT/Amity Regional) and Christina
Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) defeated Marie Claire
Santiago and Roxana Beyranvand, 9-7, at second doubles;
Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/Ross School) and
Sally Gordon (Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy)
were 8-4 winners over Allison Najewicz and Yorie Watanbe at No.
3.
In singles matches completed last week, Scott-Giry turned back
Najewicz 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Gordon polished off Alli Phillips
6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Gophers prevailed in all four matches completed today:
Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch
Plains-Fanwood) downed Miku White 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1,
Tanya Cooley (Arlington, VA/Wakefield) toppled
Meryl Krich 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Austin was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over
Santiago at No. 3 and Grimm blitzed Beyranvand 6-0, 6-0 at No.
4.
The Gophers, who faced top-seeded Mary Washington tomorrow in the
semifinals of the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference championship
tournament, have now won five of their last six matches.
