Clark Earns Titles at Fifth Singles, Third DoublesOctober 1, 2006
WASHINGTON, DC — Goucher players placed first in
four of the six singles flight and one of the three doubles flights
at the Capital Fall Classic this weekend.
Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch
Plains-Fanwood) won three matches — all in straight
sets — on the way to the Flight 1 singles title. The freshman
opened with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Rachel Tenuta from Catholic,
then defeated Maelina Sakaio from the U.S. Naval Academy 6-1, 6-2
in the semifinals before topping Catholic's Corinne Alcorn in the
championship match 6-2, 6-4.
Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/Ross School) of
the Gophers also competed in Flight 1 and lost to Alcorn in the
semifinals 6-7 (4), 6-3, (10-4).
The other three Goucher players who went 3-0 to finish first in
their singles flight were Mouna Attarha (Piedmont,
CA/Piedmont) in Flight 4, Dana Clark (Oxford,
MI/Sacred Heart) in Flight 5 and Christina Grimm
(Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) in Flight 6.
Attarha was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Navy's Terry Borja in the Flight
4 finals. In Flight 5, Clark disposed of Navy's Kellie McDuffie
6-2, 6-1 in the finals; in Flight 6, Grimm was declared champion by
default.
The two Goucher players in Flight 3 — Stephanie
Austin (Woodbridge, CT/Amity Regional) and Sally
Gordon (Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy) — met in
the consolation finals with Austin prevailing 8-3. Tanya
Cooley (Arlington, VA/Wakefield) and Hilary Fast
(Wilton, ME/Mount Blue) were declared consolation
champions of Flight 2 and Flight 5, respectively, by default.
In doubles play, Clark and Scott-Giry were champions of Flight 3,
Heinz and Cooley finished in second place Flight 1, and Austin and
Grimm were runners-up in Flight 2. Scott-Giry and Clark were 8-3
winners over Navy's Borja and Christina Montoya in the Flight 3
championship match.
