Gophers Bow to Captains, Slip to 4-3
Lone Goucher Wins Comes From Heinz, McPhail at No. 2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Goucher trailed only 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play this afternoon, but Christopher Newport proceeded to sweep the six singles matches - all in straight sets - to gain an 8-1 victory over the Gophers.
Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Kim McPhail (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) broke through at No. 2 doubles to provide the Gophers (4-3) with their only point. Heinz and McPhail were 8-6 winners over Frannie Shivar and Brittany Stevens.
The Captains (2-0) prevailed in the other two doubles matches, getting an 8-2 win from Stefanie Leblang and Lindsey Pantele over Tanya Cooley (Arlington, VA/Wakefield) and Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) at No. 1 and an 8-2 triumph from Chandler Long and Lisa Dyke over Dana Clark (Oxford, MI/Sacred Heart) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) at No. 3.
At first singles, Pantele knocked off Pulupa 6-1, 6-3.
Scott-Giry came closest to winning a set in singles play for Goucher as she fell to Stevens at No. 5, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
