Gophers Hold Upper Hand in Singles PlayGoucher Defeats Drew in Inaugural Landmark Match for Both Teams

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher players were victorious in five of the six singles matches today as the Gophers defeated Drew, 6-3, in the inaugural Landmark Conference match for both teams.
The Gophers (6-3, 1-0 Landmark) came up with only one win in doubles play. At No. 1, Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) and Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) recorded an 8-6 triumph over Alex Holzman and Sarit Ashkenazi.
Heinz faced Holman again during singles competition, earning a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory at No. 2.
Goucher's other four wins in singles play were by Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) at No. 3, Stella Day (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) at No. 4, Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) at No. 5 and Kim McPhail (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) at No. 6. Grimm downed Carly Mora 6-0, 6-1, Day turned back Sarah Cronholm 6-2, 6-1, Scott-Giry polished off Amber Porzio 6-1, 6-1, and McPhail was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Catherine Jacobs.
The Rangers (1-3, 0-1 Landmark) picked up their only point in singles play at No. 1 where Ashkenazi needed three sets to defeat Pulupa. Ashkenazi took the opening set, 6-2, and Pulupa came back in the second set, winning 6-1. In the decisive third set, Ashkenazi prevailed 6-3.
