YORK, Pa. - Not only was Goucher able to extend its winning streak to six matches today by defeating York, 7-2, but with the victory, the Gophers picked up their 10th win of the season, something they hadn't accomplished since 2000-01.
The Gophers (10-3), who haven't been beaten since they suffered an 8-1 setback to Christopher Newport back on March 4, captured five of the six singles matches. Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over York's Paige Doutrich at No. 2.
Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton), who competed at No. 5, and Stella Day (Bellingham, WA/Sehome), in Goucher's line-up at No. 6, also won their singles matches in straight sets. Grimm knocked off Caralyn Caruso 6-1, 6-2; Day registered a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Katie Muir.
Tanya Cooley (Arlington, VA/Wakefield) needed a third set to complete a 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (5) victory over York's Heidi Acker at No. 3 and Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) defeated Stephanie Nelson of the Spartans 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) at No. 4.
York (2-6) picked up its only point during singles play at No. 1 where Keturah Buchanan turned back Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) 6-4, 7-6 (2).
The Gophers won two of the three doubles matches. At No. 2, Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) and Grimm dealt Nelson and Doutrich an 8-6 setback; at No. 3, Kim McPhail (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) and Dana Clark (Oxford, MI/Sacred Heart) topped Buchanan and Caruso, 8-5.
