Grimm Improves to 10-2 in Singles Play by Winning at No. 5

April 5, 2008

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Goucher gave Moravian, the team picked to win the 2007-08 Landmark Conference title in a pre-season poll, all it could handle today, but the Greyhounds (5-5, 3-0 Landmark) were able to finish on top, 5-4.

An 8-4 victory by Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) over Brittany Popaca and Jennel Yelito at No. 2 provided the Gophers (10-4, 2-1 Landmark) with their only point in the doubles competition.

Grimm also supplied Goucher, picked to finish in sixth place in the same poll of head coaches and sports information directors, with one of its three singles wins. Competing at No. 5, she defeated Kerry McKinley 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (9), and is now 10-2 in singles play this season.

Goucher's other two singles wins came from Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) at No. 1 and Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) at No. 2. Pulupa defeated Lindsey Hopper 7-5, 2-6, 6-3; Heinz improved to 6-1 at second singles with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Dyana Swan.
