Freshman Prevails on Tough 'Day' for Gophers

Grimm, Scott-Giry Break Through at Second Doubles

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stella Day (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) was the only singles player for Goucher to win her match as the Gophers were handed a 7-2 Landmark Conference setback today by Catholic.

Competing at No. 6, the freshman recorded a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (4) victory over Catholic's Reenie Costello.

The Cardinals (4-8, 3-2 Landmark) won four of the remaining five singles matches in straight sets, including Rachel Tenuta's 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) at No. 1.

The Gophers (10-5, 2-2 Landmark) managed only one win in doubles play, as well. It came at No. 2 where Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) dominated the Catholic duo of Costello and Corinne Alcorn, 8-0.
