Royals Pull Out 5-4 Victory Over Gophers

April 12, 2008
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher still had Scranton within its sights today after getting victories from Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) at No. 4 and Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) at No. 5, but still needed to win two of the three remaining singles matches that went to a third set.
Tanya Cooley (Arlington, VA/Wakefield) came through for the Gophers, coming back after dropping the first set to down Sarah Costello 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3, but the Royals (6-5, 4-1 Landmark) prevailed at second and sixth singles to earn enough points for a 5-4 Landmark Conference triumph.
At No. 2, Danielle Red turned back Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) 4-6, 6-2, 6-1; at No. 6, Chelsea Paskman defeated Stella Day (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4.
Attarha needed just two sets to get past Danielle Wylie 6-4, 6-1; same for Grimm, who trailed 5-0 in the first set before rallying to defeat Caroline Curtin 7-5, 6-3.
At first singles, Scranton's Deirdre Wylie was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery).
The Gophers (10-6, 2-3 Landmark) picked up their only win in doubles play at No. 2 where Grimm and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) got by Danielle Wylie and Kelly Costello, 8-6.
