Gophers Crunch Crusaders, Clinch Playoff Berth
Grimm/Scott-Giry Record 14th Doubles Win, One Shy of Record
April 19, 2008
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - With the final berth in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs riding on the outcome of Goucher's match against Susquehanna today, the Gophers started off by sweeping the three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Then they secured their spot in the playoffs by capturing five of the six singles matches to earn an 8-1 victory over the Crusaders.
With the first and third doubles matches already in the books, the Gophers (11-7, 3-3 Landmark) knew they would have a lead entering singles play. But when Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) completed a 9-8 victory at No. 2 by prevailing in the tiebreaker, 9-7, head coach Sally Baum's squad was looking good, ahead 3-0.
Grimm and Scott-Giry are now 14-2 as a doubles team in 2007-08, just one victory shy of the school record for most doubles wins in a season.
Grimm and Scott-Gory also produced two of Goucher's five wins during singles competition. At No. 5, Grimm posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Julie Springer; at No. 6, Scott-Giry knocked off Ashley Mill 6-2, 6-2.
Goucher's other wins in singles play were by Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) at No. 2, Tanya Cooley (Arlington, VA/Wakefield) at No. 3 and Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) at No. 4.
The only match the Crusaders (5-10, 1-5 Landmark) were able to win was No. 1 singles where Brittany Guerin turned back Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) 6-1, 7-6 (3).
