Sept. 16, 2007
PURCHASE, N.Y. - The depth of Goucher's singles lineup was clearly on display today as the Gophers suffered losses at first and second singles, and yet still managed to slap a 6-3 setback on Manhattanville.
Wins by Christina Grimm (Greenwich, CT/New Hampton) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, NY/The Ross School) at No. 2 and Stella Day (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) and Dana Clark (Oxford, MI/Sacred Heart) at No. 3 staked the Gophers to a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Grimm and Scott-Giry defeated Ariane Lewis and Danielle Waldron, 9-7; Day and Clark knocked off Shadae Hicks and Julia Romana, 8-4.
The Valiants (1-4) picked up wins from Blake Leeser and Paisley Coats at first and second singles, respectively, but the Gophers (2-0) came out on top in the other four singles matches, each time in straight sets. Grimm prevailed in a tiebreaker to win the first set of her match at No. 3 before completing a 7-6 (3), 6-4 triumph over Lewis.
Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Waldron at No. 4 singles. Day and Clark picked up Goucher's remaining two wins in singles play with Day disposing of Hicks at No. 5, 6-0, 6-3, and Clark downing Romano at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.
