Gophers Resume 2008-09 Season, Chalk Up Fifth Win
WASHINGTON, D.C. Goucher, which prevailed in four of the six matches it played in the fall, resumed its 2008-09 season today and registered a resounding 9-0 triumph over Trinity (D.C.).
Attarha, Bergman Register Seventh Wins in Singles Play
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Goucher, which prevailed in four of the
six matches it played in the fall, resumed its 2008-09 season today
and registered a resounding 9-0 triumph over Trinity (D.C.).
There were only five contested singles matches and one of them ended with the Trinity player retiring after one game. The Gophers (5-2) dropped only one game in the other four singles matches combined.
At first singles, Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) defeated Paola Flores 6-0, 6-0. Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) both chalked up their seventh singles wins of the season: Attarha polished off Agnes Bien-Aime 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Bergman posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cynthia Reyes at No. 3.
Vickey Casey (Orange, N.J./Chatham Hall) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Mary Ataku at No. 4.
There were only two contested doubles matches. At No. 1, Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) and Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) downed Bien-Amie and Flores, 8-0; at No. 2, Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) and Hilary Fast (Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue) turned back Flores and Ataku, 8-0.
