Pulupa, Bergman Prevail in Crucial Singles Matches
MADISON, N.J. – Trailing 4-3, the only way for Goucher to
defeat Drew today was to prevail in both of the singles matches
that went to a third set.
Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) kept the Gophers' hopes alive by finishing off Amber Porzio 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4 at No. 4, squaring the Landmark Conference match at 4-4 and leaving the outcome riding on what transpired between Goucher's Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Drew's Amber Cicardo at No. 6.
Bergman, who was 8-3 in singles play this season coming into today's match, came back from being down a set to register a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 win that provided the Gophers (7-2, 1-0 Landmark) an exciting 5-4 triumph over the Rangers (3-8, 0-1 Landmark).
Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) also were victorious in singles play for Goucher, which needed a total of four singles wins after coming out on top in only one of the three doubles matches. Heinz, competing at No. 2, defeated Drew's Kristin Brown 6-0, 6-1, and Scott Giry handed Catherine Jacobs a 6-2, 6-4 setback at No. 5.
Goucher's only win in doubles play was at No. 3 where Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and Bergman turned back Jacobs and Cicardo, 8-5.
