ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Goucher avoided its first loss of the
spring when it claimed four wins in singles play today to emerge
with a 5-4 victory over St. Mary's (Md.).
Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) provided the Gophers (8-2) with their only win during the doubles competition as they defeated Jackie Brady and Jerilyn Rogalski, 8-0.
That left the Gophers in a position where they had to win at least four singles matches or suffer their first loss since resuming their 2008-09 campaign on March 11. In chronological order, Attarha and Bergman were the first two Goucher players to prevail in singles play: Attarha, competing at No. 2, pinned a 6-1, 6-1 setback on Michelle Compton; Bergman won her team-leading 10th singles match of the season as she polished off Colleen O'Neil 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5.
Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) put Goucher ahead 4-3 when she walked off the court with a 6-0, 7-6 (0) triumph over Rogalski at fourth singles. The Seahawks (7-3) were able to even the overall match at 4-4 with a win at sixth singles, but Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) earned the decisive fifth point for the Gophers with her 7-6 (6), 7-5 victory over Monica Powell at No. 3.
The win was the fifth straight for Goucher in the all-time series between the two intra-state rivals.
